Ginger

The past few days have been rough for Ginger.

On Sunday night Ginger started yelping in pain and couldn't get up and down the stairs or even onto the bed. I decided around midnight to take her to the ER to see what the problem was. They jumped to a very scary conclusion that her stomach may have flipped which can be fatal without emergency surgery (that costs $5,000). We knew that we couldn't afford that so I took her home and we gave her some pain medicine. She did well through the rest of the night and I made an appointment the next day to see our regular vet.

He determined that she did not flip her stomach but instead has a bulging disk in her neck. He gave her a cortizone shot and some pills to take this week as well as a muscle relaxer.

She is feeling much better today but we aren't sure if she will need to continue taking medication in order to function normally without having any pain. The vet said that if it doesn't go away on its own (highly unlikely) that she would need surgery which is something we are not willing to do for various reasons. Needless to say it has been a tough couple of days for Ginger as well as us.

Luckily the medicaiton she is taking now is affordable and we have plenty of time to try and correct the situation without surgery by changing her diet and attempting to shed some weight off of her. If anyone knows anything else that might be helpful please share.
